Jump Start Questions and Answers

Understand what a jump start can help with, when another fault may need attention and what to consider afterwards. For current availability and booking details, visit our jump start service page.

Symptoms and suitability

Will a jump start fix the reason my car will not start?
A jump start may get a vehicle running when its starter battery lacks charge. It does not establish why the battery went flat or guarantee that the vehicle will restart later. If it will not start, or the problem returns, further assessment may be needed before deciding whether to recharge or replace the battery.
Should I try to jump start a damaged or leaking battery?
No. Do not attempt to jump start a battery that looks damaged or is leaking. Tell the person arranging assistance what you have noticed, and follow the vehicle handbook. A jump start is not suitable for every battery condition.
Is jump starting an EV the same as charging its traction battery?
No. Low-voltage battery assistance is separate from charging or testing the high-voltage traction battery that powers the vehicle. A traction battery cannot be jump-started. Low-voltage procedures depend on the model, so provide your vehicle details and check the manufacturer’s instructions before arranging help. Do not assume every EV is suitable.

After a jump start

What should I do after a successful jump start?
The battery may still need recharging after the engine starts. Follow the vehicle manufacturer’s charging guidance and ask for advice suited to the battery and its condition. The time needed to recharge varies with the battery’s condition, the vehicle and the charging method. A short drive may not fully recharge it.
What if the vehicle will not start again later?
A successful start does not prove that the original problem has been resolved. Make a note of when the problem returns and any warning messages. Explain that the vehicle has already been jump-started when arranging further help; repeated starting attempts are not a substitute for finding the cause.
Can I arrange battery replacement instead?
Battery replacement is a separate service. Use the battery assistance page to check fitting arrangements and discuss the correct battery for your vehicle before booking. A jump start booking does not guarantee that a replacement battery will be supplied or fitted during the same visit.
