Fault Code Diagnostics Reports: Questions and Answers

Understand how fault codes help guide further investigation and why a scan is not the same as a repair or a complete safety inspection. Visit the diagnostics service page for booking details.

Understanding fault codes

Does a fault code prove which part needs replacing?
No. A stored code points to a condition detected by a vehicle system. It is a starting point for investigation, rather than proof that the component named in its description has failed. Further checks may be needed to distinguish a component problem from wiring, connections or another cause.
How should I use a fault-code report?
Use it as information to support the next repair discussion. Keep it with your description of the symptoms and explain when they occur. The codes should be considered alongside the vehicle’s behaviour and any further checks; a list of codes alone is not a complete repair plan.
Does clearing a code fix the fault?
No. Removing a stored code does not repair its cause. A warning can return if the problem remains. Discuss the findings before asking for codes to be cleared, because stored information may help with further investigation.

Scope and next steps

Are mechanical repairs included?
No. Dual Action Roadside’s fault code reading and diagnostics service is an information service and does not include mechanical repairs. Check the service details and discuss the symptoms before booking.
Will a scan confirm that my vehicle is safe to drive?
Do not treat a fault-code scan as clearance to drive. Follow the vehicle handbook and seek advice about warning lights or changes in how the vehicle behaves. If a warning appears while driving, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and road-safety guidance; do not stop in a live lane unless absolutely necessary.
Can every vehicle system be read?
Do not assume that every system on every vehicle can be accessed. Give your registration, make, model and the warning or symptom you want investigated before booking, so support for the requested work can be checked.
